A member of the legume (bean) family, it's native to southern Europe, north Africa and western Asia however, with the right conditions this attractive plant will thrive in your garden. and is a common sight in Yorkshire, home of the Pontefract cake. If you get the chance to chew on a liquorice root, you will be consuming it as it was thousands of years ago and still is in many parts of the world.
A sweet and aromatic thirst quencher, liquorice has long been a favourite of adults and children alike where in it's most popular form it's twisted and moulded into some wonderful shapes with added flavours and colours. Confectionary is not the only market where we see liquorice, it's also use even more extensively in the tobacco industry, and is also used in perfumes,, and of course it's prized world wide for it's widely believed therapeutic attributes.
This wonderful root does come with warnings,; excessive or long term consumption should be avoided by those with hypertension, kidney problems and in pregnancy., excessive consumption can effect electrolyte balance, blood pressure and potassium levels.
Food Standards Agency requires all liquorice food stuffs to carry the warning “contains liquorice— people suffering from hypertension should avoid excessive consumption.”
The problem with this statement is that the word "excessive" is open to personal interpretation. We at The Extraordinary Tea Company use liquorice, in varying quantities, in some of our blends, if you are using these blends you will find details of recommended usage on our labels.
As with all our ingredients, if you have any concerns, do please contact us or speak to a GP or Pharmacist.
